Welcome to the website of the U.E.M.S. Section of Medical Microbiology

The Section of Medical Microbiology was founded at a meeting of the UEMS Council held in Brussels on 19 April 2008 on the initiative of Prof. John E. Degener.  Twenty-one delegates from 16 European countries attended the first Meeting of this new Section in Brussels on 27 September 2008. The Section now includes 23 full-member countries (Austria, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Croatia, Denmark, Finland, Georgia, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland, Belgium, France, UK), 3 associate-member country (Turkey, Georgia, and Serbia) and 1 observer country (Macedonia).

The main purposes of the UEMS are the harmonisation and improvement of the quality of medical specialists training, qualifications and practice in the European Union.

The first UEMS Medical Microbiology Examination was held in Paris in 2022. The second UEMS Medical Microbiology Examination was held online on December 3rd  2024.  See examination page for more details on examination 2026.

                                     

Announcement

3rd UEMS European Examination in Medical Microbiology, supported by ESCMID

When: 28 November 2026

Where: Online with remote invigilation

The UEMS (European Union of Medical Specialists), Section of Medical Microbiology, in partnership with ESCMID, is pleased to announce the 3rd UEMS-ESCMID European examination in Medical Microbiology.

The examination is based on the Curriculum which is part of the UEMS CORE TRAINING PROGRAMME FOR MEDICAL MICROBIOLOGY (UEMS Section of Medical Microbiology core curriculum at https://uems-smm.eu/uems-smm/), current European best practice guidelines and recent pivotal publications in the major journals.

EXAM:
The European Examination will take place on 28 November 2026 12:00-14:00 CET.

This exam fee is €500. There is a 50 % reduction in the exam fee for the first candidates to register, so their fee will be €250.

The exam fee payment can be made after the candidate is notified that they meet the eligibility criteria, and their application to sit the exam has been accepted. Payment instructions will follow on the registration platform.

QUESTIONS:
The question format will be Multiple Choice, in the single-best-answer format. The questions will be in English only.

ELIGIBILITY:
The exam is open to candidates who:

  • Are a Medical Doctor
  • Are a trainee or consultant in Medical Microbiology
  • The country in which the trainee is training is a full member, associate member or observer member of UEMS. The list of countries is accessible on www.uems.eu 
  • Have completed a minimum of 40 months of full-time training in Medical Microbiology as a doctor and is endorsed by two referees, where at least one should be the trainer/supervisor.

Acceptance of the application is based on the above eligibility criteria.

The European Examination in Medical Microbiology is organised and managed by UEMS Section of Medical Microbiology, with the support of and in cooperation with ESCMID. The UEMS is a European organisation for medical specialists (medical doctors), and can hence only develop training requirements for medical doctors.
